Our growing girl - Leah

Seriously, this toddler cannot get any cuter and more grown up.  I can't believe that she will be TWO in virtually no time.  How does that happen!?

Anyway, just wanted to share a few things I love, or things that require a lot of my patience, about Leah right now:

- Both girls have always been mommy's girls.  Maybe it's a daddy thing, but Jason isn't always the most patient, or understanding and sympathetic of the girls.  This of course, pushes them to be mommy's girls and sometimes drive a wedge between all of us.  Not ideal and something we continually work on.  Lately, I have witnessed Leah wanting to do more with her daddy.  It's so sweet when she squeals as he arrives home and runs to see him, demanding him to pick her up.  Just last night, daddy came home late from work and I was already in Leah's room getting her settled for bed.  She opened her eyes and saw him, and instantly reached up for him to hug and kiss him.  That made me so, so happy!  Usually she wants to stay as far away from him as possible when it's bedtime.  And, she asks where daddy is all the time now.  Daddy has been working late this week, and before dinner, during dinner, when we play or go on a walk at night, and during bed, she will say, "Dad?"

- She is adding more and more words to her vocabulary every day.  My concerns are so much less than they used to be in terms of her speech.  I've been trying to work with her on putting words together (i.e. milk please, or read book).  I'm also trying to encourage her to use words to express herself instead of the pointing and grunting that we have gotten used to and unfortunately can understand pretty well.  Are all mom's mind readers?  She still finds it hard to communicate when she is hungry or tired, but so do I sometimes.  I find myself saying "Use your words Leah", which is not very successful but helps me to remain calm and remind myself that she does have words, we just need to encourage her to use them.

- Bedtime over the last few weeks has turned into a disaster.  We had this good routine going where she would brush teeth, kiss big sister, turn music on, maybe read a book or two (though we often do this before we brush teeth), and then lay on the floor of Leah's room and snuggle for a bit.  We've been letting her sleep on the floor for an hour or so and then transfer her to her crib before we went to bed.  I'm thinking this girl might need to move to a big girl bed sooner than her sister.  There's just something about the crib, she doesn't like.  But, lately, she seems to get upset as we start the bedtime process and just whimpers and cries, even when I hold her or pat her back.  If I leave her alone, she screams so that's not an option I like either.  I'm starting to think she doesn't like the dark room.  She will point to the light switches or door over and over.  Sometimes I turn the bathroom light on, or the closet light to try and settle her down, but it doesn't always work.  I just don't know, and I really hope it's a short phase because it wears me out and takes up most of what would be my free time in the evenings.

- I know it's hard for kids to transition, and I've always tried to give the girls warning when we area changing routines or whatever.  "Five more minutes before we go brush our teeth."  "Two more books before we turn the lights out."  "Three more bites of peas before dinner is over."  Well, little miss has started using that to her advantage.  If I tell her, "it's time to leave."  She will hold up a finger and say "One".  Okay, fine Leah, one more minutes....but then when I again say it's time to go, she does the same thing!  With her cute smile and sweet face!  Oh man, it's so hard to not fall for her antics.  I have a love hate relationship with that finger of hers.

- She is now saying Lesley's name very clearly, at least to us.  The "L" sound is missing for the most part, but I totally understand the "es-ee".  It's pretty cute.  And, she is also tattling on Lesley quite frequently.  It's kind of good, but mostly bad.  I like to know when Lesley has misbehaved so I can properly punish her, but it gets old when Leah constantly thinks Lesley is wrong...when really, Leah may have hit Lesley first or stolen her book or whatever.  Recently, I witnessed Lesley push Leah, so I put Lesley in time out.  Leah positioned herself about 5 feet from the staircase where time out is located and when Lesley moved, even just slightly, Leah made sure to point and start yelling "es-ee, es-ee, es-ee."  Leah knows that when you are in time out you are not allowed to get up until Mommy or Daddy says you can (and you apologize and hug the victim, if the victim allows it).  Well, she was on guard!  "Worry about yourself" is becoming a frequent phrase for both girls.

- I mentioned she is a mommy's girl which sometimes I can handle, but wears me out too.  One night at the dinner table, daddy was trying to help Leah with something and she kept saying over and over, whining and crying, "mom, mom, mom".  I was trying to get things on the table, and didn't drop everything to attend to mommy's girl.  Lesley was witnessing this and told Leah, "Mommy is going to Kansas so you can just stop fussing for a few days."  This was right before I had to go to the office to work for a few days, and unlike most trips, Lesley was pretty excited (Daddy promised a trip to the grocery store salad bar and pizza).  I guess she also was happy that Leah would have to stop fussing for mommy since I wouldn't be there to "rescue" her.

- Leah is quite the Miss Independent these days.  Sometimes that's so awesome, i.e. when I need her to put her shoes on while I corral big sister or when I'm trying to put dinner together and she is picking up the toys or stacking books.  But, at times, it requires a LOT of patience.  I will pick a book up to help, and she will throw it back on the ground only to bend over and pick it up again.  Or, I'll force shoes on her to expedite departure to church, and she will kick and scream and take her shoes on before we get to the car.

- "Hide."  This is one of her favorite activities and words right now.  It really cracks me up when she shoes me her fork, says "hide", and then wraps it in her napkin.  Or, she will hide her toothbrush in her blanket.  Thankfully she has not hidden anything important that we can't find yet.  Though I'm sure that will come.

- When I got back from my work trip, I was asking her all these questions.  When she didn't know the answers, she would just shrug her shoulders and give a quick shake to her head.  It was adorable!  I was laughing and smiling with her, so of course she kept doing it since she loved my reaction.  I mean seriously, an almost two year old shrugging her shoulders.  Cute!

We sure love this girl, and how she teaches us patience and understanding...and makes us smile all the time!

Swingset Fun

We spent some time outside on the swingset one of the nights it was only 90 degrees. I think I was trying to kill some time hoping Daddy would be home before dinner was cold. I love eating as a family, and the girls tend to eat better if we are ALL sitting at the table together....but Jason has been working late(r) several nights which makes it difficult. These little ladies are h.u.n.g.r.y. when they get home from school.

She looks like of like a moviestar with these sunglasses, right?

We are going to have to retire her "I am 1" shirt soon.  Sad.

Lesley was checking out the missing step.  A certain Daddy thought it would be fun to go down the stairs with a little extra hop one day....yes, it busted!  Every time he is out there messing around, I warn him not to break the swingset.  Another "I told you so, Mommy knows best" moment.  In his defense, the step was a little rotten.  Easily fixed with a new piece of wood, and after these pictures were taken we finally got around to re-staining/sealing the wood.  It has just been too dang hot!

They really, really love the swingset.  Too bad it has been so hot this summer!  Our days out there playing were limited during July and August.

Even Linus came out to play.  He is an outdoor cat at heart!  I love seeing him run around the yard, almost like he is chasing the kids.  When we let him out in the evenings, he run and then just lounge on the patio or up in the playhouse.  Some nights he even sleeps outside, i.e. when we forget to let him back in.  The mornings are early when that happens, since he'll sit outside the patio door by our bedroom and meow.

She was getting silly on the slide.

She hung out on those bars for a long time.  I realized she was filling her diaper once she finally came down and running over to me saying "Poop."

We are all hoping for more great weather so we can hang out by the swingset...of course, I've also noticed the days getting shorter.  Bummer.

Smile!

The girls made their first trip to the dentist since moving to Tulsa.  They both did great!

Since Jason took Lesley to the dermatologist last week, I was on the dentist duty.  The funny part is that the dentist is literally across the street from his new office, which he just moved into on Friday.  It made for a nice stop on our way home, the girls wanted to tell Daddy about the dentist so he met us in the parking lot for a quick visit and a few kisses.

I was quite pleased with the dentist visit!  Well, except for the process of filling out patient information.  Typically you would do that online before visiting but their server/system had been down so I could not do that.  Which meant I had to try and fill it out in a private room with a computer while keeping two kiddos somewhat quiet, and out of trouble!  I was a little stressed as they were running around squealing and pointing out the various animals on the wall and climbing up on the chairs...and I actually found myself filling in Lesley's patient history on Leah's forms causing a bit of confusion for the nurse.  Oops!  Oh well, we avoid peanuts for both girls so it doesn't matter much that I put that as an allergy for both.

As soon as we walked in the door, Lesley noticed her name on a sign posted by the waiting room.  Every kid gets a bright sign to take home!  That was pretty cool.  Then, they took the kids' photos to keep in their charts.  Another great idea!  We had to pretend we were webcamming with Grandma Nancy since the camera was actually a webcam and it was HARD to get them to look at it versus the newness of the office.  Everything was electronic though and I loved that!

(All  photos taken with my phone, no camera on this adventure.)

Leah was a trooper!  She was intrigued by the doctor's exam gloves and quickly opened her mouth to get her teeth counted.  She had 8 teeth on top and 8 teeth on bottom and was pretty proud to show them off.  It was funny how they assumed Lesley would go first, but really it was the other way around and Leah was our example for Lesley.

Leah's teeth don't have a lot of space between them so we should be flossing every day.  We'll see how that goes!  She has a good bite and her teeth line up nicely though.

Neither one of the girls actually sat in the chair during the exam, but instead sat in my lap and laid their heads towards Dr. Fox when she counted their teeth and took photos of their mouths.  In the photo above, Lesley was watching cartoons...for about 45 seconds.  They were much more interested in the wooden toys in the room.  Leah even picked them up before we left.  She is such a clean girl.

Once the dentist was done with the exam and taking the pictures, she put the pictures up on the screen for me to see and walked me through any concerns and all the good things about their little mouths.  The girls thought that was awesome to see their teeth up on the screen.  It was nice that she could quickly do the exam, but still circle back and walk me through what she looked for.

Lesley has 10 teeth on top and bottom, with deep groves in her back teeth which might be a concern in the future.  Dr. Fox said everyone's teeth are designed differently and unfortunately Lesley might have to be worried about the grooves.  We just need to avoid fruit snacks, raisins, and other sticky foods that might get stuck and dig deep.  What are the chances that I had just stocked up on raisins for snacks.  Ugh.  I guess I need to brainstorm more ideas.

We should also use fluoride toothpaste and brush the back first to allow the fluoride to sink in a little.  No rinsing either!

Anyway, this office is a husband/wife team who has 5 boys!  I was very pleased with the set up - private rooms for the little kids like a doctor's office, but open chairs for the older kids.  They even had a TV room for the kids to use while waiting, a train table in the waiting room, a WALL of toys and another WALL of stickers.  They go big time on the prizes!

Lesley picked out a slinky, a Thomas sticker and a Lightning McQueen sticker.  Leah snatched a gigantic bouncy ball along with two big stickers.

So proud of my girls!  Next time they will get a thorough cleaning and x-rays....I had forgotten to add them to my dental insurance so this was out of pocket expense for now.  We'll be back in January!

Lesley has already said she wants a yellow slinky next time.  She's a planner!

Rainy Day

It rained one afternoon/evening so we decided to head outside and mess around a little. Proper attire includes the following:

1.) Rain boots, or snow boots in Leah's case (Don't worry, we have a pair of rain boots to give her with her birthday gift, just didn't want to break them out for this one time rain.)
2.) Baseball hats
3.) Smiles because "this is so much fun Mommy!"

Daddy was too lazy to get off the porch, so all the photos were taken from that viewpoint.  What a party pooper!  Seriously, it rains once in the last 3 months and he doesn't even want to join us.

I took advantage of the moist ground and picked lots of weeds.  Those things drive me crazy!  It seems they thrive just fine in the dry weather, and then TAKE OVER the grass.

Lesley found a random water bottle.  She carried that thing around and put stuff in it to dump back out over and over again.

Seriously, snow boots in the summer?  That's how we roll!

Checking to see what weeds Mommy is pulling on the side of the house.

Sugar and Sprinkles

There is a donut shop close to the house that we have loved going to.  Obviously not the most healthy option for breakfast, but so tasty and fun!

The girls were picking out their donuts.  Lesley wanted a cake donut with sugar this time.

Leah ALWAYS gets one with sprinkles, and she mostly just eats the sprinkles.  It's pretty messy!

I realized after we got there that Leah was wearing a white shirt, plus it was new!  Ugh!  We made do and thankfully she got very little frosting on it.

Do you like her ponytail?  Her hair is a little crazy these days, and she insists on pony tails when Lesley gets one.  So we oblige even if it looks a little silly.

I love the "pinecone" donuts (upper right in the photo).  Lesley also likes these and I think she was trying to tell me here that it was hers.  She claimed 3 of the 4 items on the tray this morning.  Luckily for her daddy and mommy, she can't eat that much.

She really only eats the sprinkles.  Silly girl!  I asked Jason if it would be inappropriate to just ask the folks behind the counter for sprinkles with no donut.

Frosting face!

Cute photo of Lesley and Daddy

She offered the rest of us bites of her donuts once she thought she had all the sprinkles off an area.

This was another fun morning at the donut shop!  It kind of reminds me of our McDonald's breakfast trips, though I don't know which might be considered healthier.  We really should be going to the Farmer's Market or some place like that for better heart-healthy options.

Valentine's Day - Last blog clean up

I promise, this is the last blog clean up I have to post.

Way back on Valentine's day - we made heart shaped, pink pancakes with strawberry syrup! Totally cool when you are almost 3.

We also did lots of crafting and even put together some homemade Valentine cards!  Hope you got yours in the mail.  Though I forgot to post this blog, I'm pretty sure I mailed those cards.

Flash back - Green Beans!

Again, no idea why this never got posted or what I was going for when uploading this photo (that looks terrible! bad, bad quality!).  But, I am so happy that I'm doing a quick blog clean up and can post some of these old photos.  Seriously, how is it even possible that this 7-8 month old baby is now THREE AND A HALF!  Where in the world has time gone?

She's looks kind of old for this to be her first time eating green beans, but I'm pretty sure that's the greenish stuff in her mouth and on her cheeks.  I feel like baby food is a thing of the past for us.  We started giving Leah table food long before we did with Lesley and Leah is nearing TWO.  The highchair has been packed away for months.

I do miss the days when the girls were still baby enough to be strapped in for dinner time.  I won't say they were always happy about that, but at least we knew where they were and they weren't running around the house.  We have recently pulled out both booster seats and force the girls to sit in them.  Thankful that we haven't returned the borrower booster seat from Grandma Nancy.  New rule - no sitting on Mommy's lap until Mommy is done eating.  That has helped.  Plus, the threat of being strapped in works most nights "You get one chance, if you get out of your seat again, I'm buckling you in."  And, then there's the dreaded kitchen timer.  "You have to remain in your seats until the timer goes off."

P.S.  Mommy and Daddy have perfected adjusting the time left without the girls even noticing.  Nice.

The same....and still different

Ha!!!!

I ran across this post in DRAFT status.  Just cleaning up my blog.  How did I miss posting this one?!  My sweet baby is a toddler now.  And, she's turning TWO in a short time.

Hope you don't mind this looking back type of blog post!  Just remember, it was written, and unedited, in October of 2010.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been fun to watch Leah over the past 2 weeks and notice all the similarities and differences between her and Lesley.

First, Leah's head is much more petite than Lesley's was. That was noticeable from the minute she entered the world. Daddy also quickly pointed out that she has a unique chin, that looks like Mommy's. Leah has her Daddy's toes - there is a big gap between her big toe and second toe. Pretty ugly if you ask me, but very much a Daddy trait that Lesley didn't get. Leah also appears to enjoy tummy time whereas that would last for all of a minute with Lesley as she HATED tummy time.

Leah has also been a good sleeper (Please, please, please don't let that comment jinx me!). She went to bed around 11pm last night and didn't wake up until just before 4am. That's almost 5 hours of solid sleep. Love it! Lesley was never really that good of a sleeper. She was a catnapper during the days and up every 3 or so hours at night pretty much until I quit nursing her at 8-9 months. Leah will take a 3+ hour nap in the morning and the same in the afternoon. It's still early so things might change as she gets older, but so far she's on a much better path than Lesley was at this point.

Leah takes after her big sister in some ways too. She has Lesley's milk smile when she is satisfied and has a full belly. Sweet, sweet, sweet. Not to mention the pouty look. Leah has already showed us that a time or two. Lesley was really good at that face! Leah also has Lesley's chubby, kissable cheeks. Love them! And, based on Leah's reaction to her first bath in the actual tub, she's going to be a fan of those too. She was relaxed and just chilling in the warm water as I scrubbed her down.

Long time coming - Dear Lesley

Dear Lesley,

I find myself wanting to write you letters, but it's just so hard to get my thoughts on paper.  Life is busy, and my emotions and feelings seem to get so jumbled and are confusing these days.  Sometimes surviving the day as a working mommy is victory alone, yet it never seems like I've won a gold medal (we've been watching the Olympics!).  You must know though, that I train, practice, and try and I truly give 100%+ of my effort to being the mommy you need and deserve.  Though I find myself failing all too often.  So, as we pass all too quickly through this stage of your life, I try to remind myself to savor every hug and kiss, every tantrum and fit, and every little piece of you I can.  Even the days it's so very hard and I just want to hand you over to someone more deserving and more capable of raising you in the world, I try to step back and just say "I'm blessed".

You are nearing 3.5 years old now.  How is that possible?  Every time I look at old photos, or I find myself saying "remember when Lesley used to do that", I am an awe and have so much gratitude that we have been given these 3.5 years.  So many mommies, and people who desperately want to be parents, can't say that.  And, here I am sometimes just trying to get to the next day, and then regretting that thought since I know each and every day, even the most challenging ones, need to be savored and thanks needs to be given for having those.

There are a lot of reasons why you make it so easy, and absolutely wonderful to be a mama:

Letters and numbers – it seems that you are craving education more and more.  We love to go to the library and check out books to read.  We are reading more and more these days, and I love it!  Tracing letters is your favorite thing to do!  We have made more dot letters for you to trace than we knew possible in the last few months.  You are getting good at writing your name, though sometimes only Mommy thinks it legible.  When you spell things, you say "Big M, o, little m, little m, y".  For a long time you didn't understand the upper versus lower case, but now you are catching on and clarify if you feel it's necessary.  I love your desire to learn and I hope that you will do great things with all your knowledge.

Pronunciation & funny comments – you have this awesome way of making things unique.  You call the remote a ka-mote, you tend to add the "y" syllable to everything!, Poppy (Papa), flip floppy, huggy, kissy, Grammy, girly, etc., you insist that the tee-pee in the playroom is actually a tea-pot, you call parmesan cheese "carmesan cheese".  Here are some other cute Lesley quotes I've managed to save over the past few months.
·      "I don't know if I can promise that."
·      "I see the moon.  It is flying to my house."
·      "Will you take my muscles off?"  When she wanted me to remove the floaties from her arms.
·      "I want steak."  - In a really loud, whiney voice while we were waiting for the chef to prepare our food at a Japanese steakhouse.
·      "I'm just kidding."
·      "Can you turn my air conditioner on?"  - She was actually wondering if we could turn her humidifier on.
·      "Uncle Andy has TWO sisters.  He's so lucky."  - When figuring out that Aunt Aimee and Mommy are BOTH Andy's sisters.
·      "It's a crab not a crumb."  - She does not understand what a crumb is, we don't have any crabs at our house but depending on how clean the house is, we might have a lot of crumbs.  I have also caught her calling crumbs "crap"..oops, I'll take the blame for that but at least it was easily corrected since she doesn't know what crap is.
·      "Mommy, the big bad wolf blew the house IN not down."
·      "Aiden has a tic tac on his arm."  - Really, it was a tattoo.
·      I was helping her say her prayers one night.  Here was what we ended up with –
Mommy:  "Dear God, thank you for my sister Leah."
Lesley:  "And, my crazy cousin Lilly and hand lotion."
Mommy:  "Please help me to listen to my mommy and daddy"
Lesley:  "And, uncle.  And, Grandmas and papas."
·      "You can't wear your jammies to work mommy.  It's not pj day today.  That was last week."
·      "I really miss the old house.  I especially miss the basement." - Huh?  We didn't even have a finished basement, and she rarely was allowed to go down there.  I guess she might be referring to the fact that the cats used to eat and use the litter box in the basement and now they get the laundry room.
·      "Take me out to the ballgame."  - She randomly just bursts out in song, especially now that she has started preschool.  This is one of her favorites.
·      "I don't want to sell this."  - We are still finding moving tags on boxes and things.  She thinks anything with a blue sticker that has numbers is for sale.
·      "It's raining cats and dogs."
·      "I want you to hold me all day."
·      "Uh-oh spaghetti o."
·      "A goose didn't lay an egg on my head Mommy."  - Her response when I told her she had a goose egg after falling and bonking her head.
·      "I have a great idea."
·      "Criss cross applesauce, hands in your lap."  - This is how they get the kids to sit what we used to call Indian style at school.
·      You found some money laying on the table one day and you quickly snatched it and said, "I'll put it in the basket at church."
·      Mommy:  "I have an idea Lesley."
Lesley:  "Mommy, you always have good ideas."
·      "Totally", "Of course not", "Actually" – Phrases used when she is going to argue with you or offer her own suggestion for the way something should be done.  And, with a little attitude.
·      "I'm going to change my attitude." – When I threaten her about kindly remind her that she is being sassy.
·      Lesley:  "Mommy, what do you want for your birthday?"
Mommy:  "A vacation"
Lesley:  "Ok, I will buy you that."
Mommy:  "How are you going to do that?"
Lesley:  "With my money."
Mommy:  "Where are you going to get your money?"
Lesley:  "At the bank."
·      "You are going to eat Sushi.  Don't do that!" – When Jason and I were talking about getting sushi to eat, but she thought we were talking about our friend's cat who is named Sushi.
·      "It says Mommy Carlin."  - When I asked her what my work ID badge says.

Your best friend is truly your cousin Lilly, though one day you told Grandma that Grandma was your best friend.  As soon as you said that, we heard Lilly crying from the other room.  She said, "But, Lesley is my best friend" and was very upset that you didn't think she was yours.  We've clarified now and it's all good.  You love that girl so much!

Honestly I think you have two best friends - Lilly and Leah - since you don't know what life was like without Leah, and if she isn't around you always ask for her and say you miss her.  And, if you are given a sticker or a treat, you make sure that you get one for Leah too.  Usually.  I'm excited for the day when we move you into Leah's room and you get to share.

You are very independent and want to do everything yourself – good thing!…but then there are times when you claim you can't do something as simple as putting your shoes on, or picking up your books – bad thing!.  It's so strange how your body just shuts down at times.  Ha!  Maybe it's not your body that lacks muscles at certain times but your orneriness kicks in.  Stalling techniques are at their all time high right now!

That's a lot of good reasons, right?  And so many more I can't even try to put on paper.  But, regardless, there are a few, just a few, ways you make it sort of challenging to be a mama.

Sleeptalking – You definitely talk a lot in your sleep.  We noticed this a LOT while on vacation and sleeping in the same room.  It's a lot of "Mommy, mommy, and MOMMY."  I guess you are having dreams or nightmares or something.  It makes me worry about you.  But, recently you have decided that you are not in fact "stuck" in your bed after we put you in there.  This means you come out of your room on your own!  Yikes!  I was loving how you would just wait in bed and holler for us.  Sometimes I greeted in the wee hours of the morning by a cute, messy haired girl who has mysteriously shown up in our room, wanting to climb in our bed.  Honestly it scares the crap out of me most of the time.  You are so quite getting down the stairs, or I'm just exhausted and don't hear you.  This isn't a terrible thing, since you are usually pretty good at snuggling up and sometimes even drifting off to sleep between Daddy and me.  But, on the mornings when it is 3am versus 6am, I could do without the visit.  Then it's always a toss up – do I take you back upstairs to your bed, or do I just let you get in bed with us.  Ugh.  The second option would be better if you did not sleep parallel with the headboard, i.e. with your feet pushed into my side.

Fashion sense is lacking (though probably on track for a 3 year old) – You are very picky independent on what you want to wear.  Your shorts MUST have pockets, you prefer skirts and dresses over anything, the pants must be 'comfy', certain pairs of socks can only be worn on certain days of the week (and the schedule is subject to change at any point, without notice).

We tried to limit the tantrums in the mornings by Mommy picking out 5 outfits and putting them in the green basket so there was enough for the whole week.  Then, all you had to do was get one outfit out of the basket each morning.  But, you would still through fits about the shorts and the socks, and whatever silly thing you could think of.  So, just today, we started with a basket of 5 outfits that YOU picked out, down to the socks and panties.  We'll see how that goes.

One day I told her that her shorts didn't match her shirt.  Her response, "But they match my undies and Leah's shirt."  Yes, valid point and I'm sure everyone that sees you today will make that same conclusion.

You are very neat and organized.  And, you notice EVERYTHING!  Some might think this is a good thing, and it sometimes is, but a lot of time it just slows things down.  Making sure everything is perfect and the routine goes exactly as you had planned it.  It's just so hard to guess what your mood will be or what you thought would happen at any point.  I really do try to plan ahead with your 3.5 year old brain and emotions in mind, but I'm not perfect at it.  And, honestly, it doesn't bother me too much when things don't go according to your plan.  In life, that's the way things often end up.  What bothers me are the emotional meltdowns that happen…we could really do without those!

The whining and tantrums are about enough to drive me mad!  You tell us "No" way too often, and you hate time out and throw massive fits if we make you go to your room.  Early bedtime has resulted a time or two for kicking and screaming, and just not listening.  I don't like that type of consequence, but it seems you reach this point of no return and really that's the only solution we have found that works.  We've asked a lot of you the past 6 months – daddy working out of town, moving to a new house, new daycare/school, etc. so I think some of the rough moments were just figuring things out.  Plus, you are weaning off regular naps which is a tough transition.  Moving was hard, for mommy too!  And, we are seeing huge improvements in the last 4-6 weeks, though there's still whining.  Ugh!  know it's just part of being three, but it's so hard for me to understand the purpose and necessity of it.  Let's get out of this whining stage soon.  Please.

You try to put words in Leah's mouth, which is funny since Leah does very little talking these days.  "But Leah said I could have her cookie."  Oh, is that so?  I didn't hear her say that.  "Well she did."  There is also a lot of tattling and more sibling fighting these days.  We work on sharing pretty much every day, and some days are pretty good.  But there are some evenings when you are just at each other's throat.  I wonder how sharing a room will go on those nights. Yikes!

Anyway, I really think the "threes" have been more trying on this mama than those dreaded "terrible twos".  But…we are nearing the half way mark and hopefully getting into another stage.  I mean, I hate time going so fast with you, but since we all know time won't stop, I might as well pray for a stage with 100% enjoyable moments, and avoid the 5% of the time I question my parenting skills.

This letter could go on and on…and it has gone on and on.  I've actually spent 3 weeks writing it!  There's just so much I want to remember about you at this age.  We love you more than this letter can try to describe.  I hope that is something you have learned in your three and half years of life.

Love forever and always,
Mommy

More Watermelon

Grandma Cheryl made for a quick visit one weekend in July.  Though we really didn't do anything and it was short, it was great to have a visitor.  Plus, Jason and I got a date night out of the deal!  Sushi and ice cream!

They were watching Daddy cut the watermelon....ready to pounce!

Watermelon

Even with the hot temperatures in July and August, we've tried to get outdoors as much as possible. It doesn't seem like a lot, but even the nights enjoying fresh watermelon on the patio are great! So thankful our house faces west so it's shady in the backyard at night.

Clearly Lesley needed another haircut for her bangs and Leah was thoroughly enjoying her bite!

A deal I couldn't pass up

Our girls LOVE Kellogg's Special K bars.  I mean really, really love breakfast bars!  They eat at least one a day, in the car on the way to school/daycare.  We've tried other type of breakfast bars, but they always go back to these and the others usually end up getting eaten by mommy or daddy.  So, I've just recently decided if that's going to be the outcome, I'm just going to buy those and stop getting anything else.

I noticed in the weekly grocery store ad that the bars were 50% off.  Nice!  A box of 6 would be only $1.64 and a box of 12 would be $2.89 (or something close to that).  I thought, what the heck, I'll get a few to stock up.  When I got to the store, I realized that there were coupon affixed to some of the boxed good for a $1 off any 2 boxes of the 6 count bars.  Limit 4 coupons per visit.  Sweet!  Even better.  So, I got lots of boxes and used $4 in coupons.  The best part was I didn't even look for the coupons or have to clip them and take to the store.  They were attached to the boxes!

We went back for our weekly shopping a few days later and although I only found 1 more coupon on the boxes (others had discovered the deal too!), we still got more boxes.  I mean, even without the coupons, it's a great deal for these bars.  And, between my two kids, we go through at least 10 every week.

And, since I now have a PANTRY, they are easy to store.  The pantry has been one of my most favorite parts to the new house.  LOVE IT!  Will never be able to go back to not having a pantry...if/when we move again.

Cousins - The June Visit to Grandma's

I don't want to forget these special memories for the girls.  So again, looking back...

No trip to Grandma Nancy's in Iowa is complete with out some cousin time!

NOTE:  All photos were stolen/borrowed from Grandma Nancy's camera.

Lyssa was making it known that she will be a big girl one of these days.  Or maybe she was just yelling at Grandma who was taking her photo.  I love her blue eyes.

Trouble.

Even more trouble.  I know exactly why Leah and Lyssa don't look thrilled to be part of this photo.  I mean, would you want to be caught in the "mug shot" with the oldest two girls?  Just point your finger Leah!

There always seems to be great photos of Papa and his girls.

Touchdown.  Or something like that.

Lilly headed  back to Grandma's for a couple days to spend time with Lesley, Leah, and G&G.  Grandma braved library time with the girls.  Sidewalk chalk is always a hit!

I mean seriously, can you get much cuter than this girl.  Love her so much!

Pudding snack at the library.  I have suspicions this was a variation of "worms in dirt".

Then off to ride some four wheelers at Papa's shop!  I still think his choice in wall color is funny.  Kawasaki green...all over the place!

Always a good time with the cousins!  Wish we could make it happen more often!
